Assistant Production Manager

Position Summary: The Assistant Production Manager works closely with the Production Manager to oversee daily production operations. This role assists with developing, implementing, and enforcing standard operating procedures, as well as planning, coordinating, and monitoring schedules to ensure deadlines are met and quality standards are maintained. The Assistant Production Manager provides leadership and direction to production teams, facilitates the training and onboarding of new staff, monitors workflow, and contributes to the overall efficiency and effectiveness across all areas of production.

Description of Duties & Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Production Manager to plan, coordinate, and execute production schedules to meet deadlines and targets.
  • Provide clear instructions and task assignments to production team members, ensuring each worker understands responsibilities and expectations.
  • Assist with labor and hands-on production work as needed to support team efficiency and productivity.
  • Monitor production runs, complete paperwork, and update records to document progress, inventory counts, and any issues encountered.
  • Identify and troubleshoot production challenges, proactively finding solutions to maintain workflow and quality standards.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and all health and safety regulations.
  • Train, onboard, and mentor new production staff, reinforcing standard operating procedures and quality expectations.
  • Develop, maintain, and review quality control processes and documentation to support internal and external compliance standards.
  • Address performance or behavior issues within the production team, implementing corrective measures in alignment with progressive discipline practices.
  • Motivate and support team members to achieve production goals while fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.

  • Strong leadership abilities with experience motivating, guiding, and supervising teams.
  • Excellent communication skills to provide clear instructions and maintain effective collaboration across teams.
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills, with the ability to balance individual responsibilities and support team members.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills to quickly address production issues and maintain workflow.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to enforcing quality standards and compliance requirements.
  • Experience in production or manufacturing environments preferred; cannabis industry experience a plus.
  • Minimum 3 years of management/supervisory experience.

 

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Production Efficiency: Percentage of production runs completed on time and within target output.
  • Quality Compliance: Number of errors, defects, or rework incidents compared to total production volume.
  • Training Effectiveness: Time-to-competency for new hires and employee retention rates after training.
  • Safety Compliance: Number of incidents, near-misses, or safety violations reported per quarter.
  • Team Productivity: Average production output per labor hour.
  • Employee Engagement: Team attendance rates, turnover, and employee satisfaction feedback.
  • Process Improvement: Number of implemented improvements or SOP updates that enhance efficiency or quality.

 

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

  • Temperature-controlled environment
  • Prolonged periods of standing, lifting, moving, reaching, and bending throughout the shift
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds at times.
